A STUDY ON THE SERUM COMPONENTS OF KOREAN MILITARY PERSONNELS

Abstract
The following results were obtained by analysing the serum components of the Korean military personnels.
1) The mean value of serum total protein was 6.87gm./dl., which is well within the normal limits, but a littel lower, in general, as compared to the civilian¢¥s value.
2) Fractions of the serum protein comprised as follow :
Albumin 54.50¡¾6.25% (3.76 ¡¾0.42 gm./dl.)
Globulin 45.46¡¾6.01% (3.14¡¾0.44 gm./dl.)
a©û-Globulin 5.22¡¾1.26%
a©ü-Globulin 11.72¡¾1.61%
b-Globulin 11.72¡¾2.20%
r-Globulin 20.89¡¾1. 17%
A/G Ratio 1. 21¡¾0. 29
3) The mean value of serum glycoprotein was 81.13¡¾20.44mg./dl., which is a little lower than the normal value for the civilians.
4) The mean hemoglobin in the serum was 14.55 ¡¾0.42 gm./dl., which is well within the normal limits.
5) The mean water contents of the serum was 70.35¡¾1.26%, which is well within the normal limits.
6) The mean total cholesterol of the serum was 119.5¡¾11.49 mg. /dl., which is considerably higher than normal for the Korean youths.
The mean cholesterol ester of the serum was .85.7¡¾ 28. 43mg./dl., and the ratio of rcholesterol -ester over the total cholesteol was 73.4¡¾8.07%.
7) The mean serum lipoprotein (beta) was 218. 8 ¡¾70.06mg./dl., which is far lower than those of the normal value for the Korean adults.
8) The total ascorbic acid content in the serum was 0. 858+0. 255mg./dl. during the summer, maintaining the normal value; 0.585¡¾0.20mg./dl. -during the late autumn and winter, showing a little decrease, and 0. 43¡¾0.14mg./dl., during the spring decreasing considerably due to the lowered intake of the ascorbic acid.
9) The mean total thiamine content in the serum was 7. 30¡¾1. 18mg./dl. which is well within the normal limits.
10) The total riboflavin content of the serum was 5.05 mg./dl., those below 50 mg./dl., was 47%, those showing the sign of avitaminosis 30%.
11) The mean total nicotinic acid content of the serum was 130 mg./dl., which is a little lower than the normal Korean value.
12) According to the serum component analysis, it may well be said that the nutritional status of the Korean military personnels were maintained well within the normal states, but those components, which showed a little lower values than the normal such as riboflavin, could possibly be maintained normal by improving the dietary intakes.
